By all accounts, there has been no belt-tightening during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Restaurants have been packed with diners who break their dawn to dusk fast at Ramadan buffets. A world economic crisis has not stopped them from spending as the Malaysian economy has been resilient. The ringgit reached a 14-year high of 2.9335 against the U.S. dollar on July 27 and it has been trading at about 2.98 ringgit to the dollar since. Inflation, though, has edged up to 3.3% but that has not stopped people from spending for Aidilfitri as they throng shopping complexes.
